Q3/15

So, another three moths are behind us, the summer is over and the end of the year is slowly approaching. Plan to limit myself to 50 tracks per mix is totally out of the window, and I’m not even a little bit sorry.

And while we were enjoying warm weather Years & Years, Kwabs, Halsey and Meg Myers released their debut studio albums. Beach House and Tame Impala also have new albums out and I can already see them being among top ten albums of the year. Also, I have to mention new albums from Youth Lagoon, Disclosure (I really had my doubts with them but they proved me wrong) Chvrches and Lana Del Rey.

Daughter have a first single from their upcoming album due for January. Jamie Woon (!!!) is alive, has a new single out and his 2nd album is scheduled to be out in November.

ZHU is working on a new Genesis Series project which will feature AlunaGeorge, Skrillex, A-Trak, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Gallant and more.

While we are talking about new projects I have to mention Sexwitch, a musical collaboration between Toy and Natasha Khan of Bat for Lashes. Their self-titled debut album, released on 25 September 2015, consists of six cover versions of 1970s psych and folk songs from Iran, Morocco, Thailand and the United States.

You can hear all of them, as well as new tracks from Jarryd James, Låpsley, John Grant and many more if you just play the 8tracks mix below.

Q2/15

q215When I started this I was planing to do this quarterly mixes with each limited to 50 tracks, but the 2nd quarter brought so many new things that i had to add a few extra songs.

The National, !!! and Beirut are sticking to their recognizable sounds with their new songs.

IAMX is back with Happiness but don’t let the title fool you, it’s still as dark as one would expect from Cris Corner.

MS MR‘s first single from the upcoming 2nd album let me a bit disappointed, but they  made it up Wrong Victories.

These past three month introduced us to some interesting sounds from some new names from around the world like Kloë, Luke Black, MiAmigo and Emilie Nicolas.

All of them and many many more can be found in the 8tacks mix below.

The first three months of the 2015 are behind us and here are the 50 songs that marked them.

We heard the long anticipated returns of Florence + the Machine, Sufjan Stevens and Róisín Murphy, Marina and The Diamonds, Say Lou Lou and Twin Shadow already have their albums out, Christina Wood and Cicely Goulder, aka Kaleida, finally released the debut EP, while James Bay, Kwabs and Shura with new tracks proved that BBC was right when they were nominated for the Sound of 2015.

Also, the begging of the year introduced us to Matt Woods, Maiday and Jarryd James who all have just one song so far but it was more than enough to totally fall in love with them. You can hear all of them, as well as a lot more if you just play the 8tracks mix below.

Top50 songs from the 2014

jaatil50

So, another year has past and I don’t know if I could call it a great year music vise but it had it’s good moments.
I won’t dare and say these are the best songs from the past year, but these are the ones that marked it for me.

There is a bit of everything on it, from the long anticipated comeback of Damien Rice, over a great collaboration of Röyksopp & Robyn, next to the new stars as Banks, Broods, FKA twigs and Sam Smith that made a mark with their debut albums, all the way to the Kwabs, Shura, Movement, Pale, Zhu and Chløë Black which all gave us just a taste of what is yet to come and made us look forward to hearing more and more from them in the future.

You can play all 50 songs on an 8track mix while the list on spotify is missing 3 of them.

Ms. Niia

You probably don’t remember her, but she was the girl featured on Wyclef Jean’s Sweetest Girl (Dollar Bill) together with Akon and Lil Wayne in 2007. A lot of time has passed since then and she is all grown up and mature now with the music to prove that.

During the years she did the James Bond themed shows and some great covers of various songs, my favourite is Jai Paul’s BTSTU. Finally, last year she reintroduced herself by independently releasing powerful ballad Made for you.

Her debut album should be released by the end of the year so while we wait for it to come out here is the video for the second song she released, Generation blue.

Ms. Meg Myers

So, when I first watched the Heart heart head video i was like “ok, this a bit creepy and cool at the same time”, and as the video progressed i could not take my eyes off it because i was just waiting to see what’s going to happen next, and boy was I right. Everything just explodes at that one great moment and I don’t know how but it all works together. All the anger, power and rawness combined with her talent produces something that just leaves you wanting for more.

Although she released hers first EP “Daughter in the choir” in 2011, with After you and Monster on it, it didn’t bring the success she deserves. This year saw the release of the second EP “Make a shadow” with Desire being one of the five tracks on it.

p.s. I still can’t get over the fact that this amazing song is not on any of the EPs
